22 More Elephant Carcasses Recovered In Tshakabhika area, Hwange National Park

TWENTY-TWO more elephant carcasses were recovered from Hwange National Park yesterday, raising fears poachers were on the prowl in the vast wildlife conservancy which is home to over 45 000 elephants.

Zimbabwe National Parks (ZimParks) spokesperson Caroline Washaya-Moyo confirmed the development saying the carcasses were recovered from the Tshakabhika area.

“The elephants were recovered this morning (yesterday). Investigations are underway to ascertain whether all were affected by cyanide. The number of affected animals is 22,” she said.

She said officials were on the ground to get to the bottom of the matter.

Most of the tusks, according to Washaya-Moyo, had been recovered.

Last month, the park lost 26 elephants in the Tsholotsho area and four others in Kariba through suspected poisoning.
In 2013, more than 115 elephants died in Hwange after poachers laced salt pans with cyanide.

Lately, there has been an upsurge in poaching activities and illegal possession of ivory with some ZimParks officials implicated in the scam. By Moses Matenga. Source-newsday
