2CHILDREN DIE IN FREEBIES STAMPEDE AT GRACE MUGABE , CHIMANIMANI RALLY

A THREE month old toddler and a grade three pupil died Thursday night while stampeding for an assortment of goodies donated by Grace Mugabe during a Zanu PF rally held at Mutambara High school in Chimanimani.

Addressing supporters at the rally which was broadcast live by state television, President Robert Mugabe’s wife declared: “Today I came loaded like never before.”

And loaded she was, doling out, among other things, 25,000 litres of cooking oil, 3000 bars of washing soap, 3120 tablets of bath soap and 240kgs of washing power.

Apart from the two fatalities, scores of ruling party supporters were also reportedly injured while running away from police dogs and soldiers assigned to distribute the large consignment which also included tractors, handbags, blankets and shoes.

Police spokesperson Charity Charamba declined to comment when approached.

“I am in a meeting,” she said before switching off her phone.

Witnesses however, told new zimbabwe  that trouble started when the restive crowd besieged the school’s sports grounds, demanding their share from the “donations.”

“People had been told to queue but they lost patience and swarmed the distribution venue after discovering that the process was slow and people who were in charge of the distribution process were engaging in corrupt activities,” said a teacher at Mutambara High School.

“At that point, the soldiers and police officers started applying force to repel the uncontrolled crowd which had breached with the razor wire barricaded school grounds.”

The teacher said Methodist church-run school temporarily suspended lessons Friday because of scores of Zanu PF supporters were still camped at there, hoping to receive the donations.

“Last night we did not sleep,” he said.

“The Zanu PF supporters spent the whole night here fighting running battles with the police and the army.

“As I speak, scores of people are still camped at the school hoping to get something.” source-newzimbabwe
