8 armed soldiers raided Ceola mine, in Concession last week, using an army vehicle and stole gold ore, leaving one soldier hospitalised


Eight members of the Zimbabwe National army reportedly stormed Ceola mine,Concession last week armed with three pistols using a military vehicle and tried to disarm security guards before stealing gold ore valued at US$150.
The matter came to light at Concession hospital on Friday where one of the soldiers is admitted after being mauled by guard dogs and failed to jump in their escape vehicle as they were escaping.
Shelton Marerwa (52) was remanded in custody to 28 June while on his hospital bed by Concession resident magistrate Ruth Moyo.
Prosecuting Moses Kuimba alleges Marewa who holds the rank of captain together with his seven accomplices who are still at large stormed Ceola mine, Concession and forced entry before identifying themselves as members from the President’s office.The soldiers who were armed with three loaded pistols demanded storeroom keys, alleging that mine firearms have no licences while ordering the security guards to surrender their fire arms to them.
The guards resisted and started fighting with the soldiers before unleashing dogs on them, The soldiers were overpowered and fled while leaving their captain behind who was injured in the fight.
The accused managed to steal a cellphone and some gold ore before driving away in the military truck.
The truck had a break down after a few kilometres and the soldiers dumped it by the road side, members of the police had to tow it to Mazowe police station where it is currently parked as exhibit.
Meanwhile, the alleged robbery comes at a time when the ZNA warned its members not to commit any crimes as they will face the wrath of the law regardless of their ranks. Source – Simbarashe Sithole
