Bulawayo City Council (BCC) Offers Industrial Attachment For College & University Students
THE Bulawayo City Council (BCC) has offered to give industrial attachment for college and university students at a time most companies had closed the doors for attaches citing economic challenges.
The local authority headed by mayor Martin Moyo said it stood ready to absorb desperate students needing industrial attachment places, saying it was an unavoidable social responsibility duty.
Minutes of a recent general purposes committee report showed that the council had 206 students attached at its various departments.
“It was brought to the attention of the committee that with the rise of de-industrialisation in the city and the nation at large, the municipal service, being one of the largest employers in the country, should expect an influx of students who needed industrial attachment,” the minutes read in part.
“Hence the council should be prepared and rise to the challenge of grooming future human capital under a tough economic environment. This appeared to be an unavoidable social responsibility on council’s part as a potential beneficiary to trained personnel in future.”
Undergoing industrial training is part of a learning exercise for students at universities and other higher learning tertiary institutions.
The minutes added: “However, the total number of students under training was likely to fluctuate at any given period due to differences in semester cycles of various educational institutions. The administration would ensure that the student population was kept within council’s mentoring capacity in terms of supervision and other material resources in order to promote expected qualitative learning environment.” By Nqobani Ndlovu source-southerneye
