Arsonists, careless campers and smokers are generally responsible for most fire outbreaks in Victoria which is highly prone to fire outbreaks in comparison to other places in Auatralia, however this particular blaze is said to have ben started by a lightning strike.

The lightning strike occurred on the 19th of December and was quickly spread by strong winds and intense heat originally but toned down with the turn of the weather to cooler and wet conditions which.

People had to swiftly abandon planned Christmas holiday festivities in the area and evacuate for their own safety after realising the extent of the blaze which was initially thought to be hours away.

It is said that the fire destruction could actually have been worse in warmer drier conditions but the current cool and wet conditions rendered the blaze less disastrous.
