‘Commander General, Josiah Magama Tongogara Predicted His Own 26/12/79 Death’- Mnangagwa
Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa, says the late of ZANLA Commander General, Josiah Magama Tongogara, predicted his death while in Mozambique.
General Tongo, the Rhodesian regime’s most wanted and most feared man at the time died on 26 December 1979 and today marks the 36th anniversary of his death.
Vice President Mnangagwa, who worked with Gen Tongo during the liberation struggle and is also related to the late national hero, revealed to the ZBC News in an exclusive interview that judging from General Tongo’s words, he predicted that the General was not going to make it back to Zimbabwe.
“I don’t know what I can say because General Tongo was a dedicated fighter. He would often say if I don’t make it into independent Zimbabwe, make sure that you go and unite people. He would say we are not fighting against white people or individuals but against an evil and racial system,” noted Cde Mnangagwa.
In memory of the gallant commander, members of the Tongogara Family and members of the Josiah Tongogara Foundation visited the National Heroes Acre this Saturday to mark the 36th anniversary of the late national hero.
General Tongo’s last born, Nyaradzo, said it is an honour for her to have a father who played such a significant role to liberate Zimbabwe.
Members of the foundation, who include Cde Webster Shamu and Ms Phyllis Johnson, spoke of the importance of protecting the legacy left by Cde Tongogara.
General Tongo did not taste the free Zimbabwe that he fought for as he died in Inyembani in Mozambique on the 26th of December 1979.
He was on his way back to Zimbabwe after the signing of the ceasefire agreement at Lancaster House in Britain.
