‘Dictatorship Fears The People And Dislikes Citizens’- MDC T Spokesman Obert Gutu

THE ruling Zanu PF party’s threats against NGOs operating in the country represent a “desperate” attempt by the “renegade” and “despotic” regime to cow people into submission, the opposition has said.

Addressing supporters at a rally in Rushinga last week, First Lady Grace Mugabe accused NGOs of pushing a regime change agenda.

Speaking at another of her rallies in Binga recently, Grace told party supporters to be wary of NGOs “because they are not genuine”.

Her remarks have been condemned by the opposition MDC-T party.

“This is a political issue and Zanu PF wants a situation where the entire nation and population is cowed into submission,” MDC-T spokesman Obert Gutu told NewZimbabwe.com Friday.

“They are obviously not happy of any situation where people are educated on their rights and when people’s rights are made an issue.”

President Robert Mugabe and his party regularly accuse NGOs of working with the West to topple the veteran leader.

Recently, the Zanu PF’s Dangamvura Chikanga legislator, Esau Mupfumi, said NGOs operating in Mutare should be monitored.

Oliver Mandipaka, who is the party’s MP for Buhera West, earlier this month asked government to deregister NGOs saying they were confusing people in the rural areas.

“It is fearful of the people and that is typical of all dictatorships,” said Gutu.

“Dictatorship fears the people and dislikes citizens, so the only way they can do it is to keep on putting pressure on the people and any organisations, in this case NGOs which they suspect could actually assist in conscientising people on their civil and political rights.

“… and as the MDC we are saying this is nonsense. (But) we are not surprised because this is coming from a renegade and despotic regime and this should be treated with utter contempt it deserves.” source-newzimbabwe
