Diesel Now Cheaper Than Unleaded As Tesco, Asda , Morrison & Sainsbury Drop Price By 2p/Litre

Diesel fuel is cheaper than unleaded petrol for the first time in 15 years but motoring groups insist the latest price fall is long overdue. An all out diesel price war is raging at the pumps as four major supermarkets slashed 2p off a litre.

Motoring group the RAC today predicted more good news with prices likely to tumble by a further 4p a litre over the next two weeks

Morrisons sparked the latest forecourt battle an’s joined in making diesel cheaper than petrol for the first time in 15 years.

It is welcome relief for the nation’s 11million diesel car drivers, who have had to shell out up to 6p a litre more than petrol car owners since April.

From tomorrow, motorists can cash in on diesel for 112.7p a litre at Asda compared with 114.7p paid by those topping up with unleaded.

Sainsbury’s is also cutting prices tomorrow while Tesco and Morrisons raced ahead with lower prices today.

Motoring groups welcomed the move but said it was long overdue.

The RAC said: “The UK is about to experience its first ‘fuel price flip’ for 15 years with diesel sold for less at the pumps than unleaded petrol.”

And with wholesale diesel prices lower than petrol, it reckons there are more price cuts on the way – just in time for cash strapped families enjoying long road trips over the summer holidays.

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: “RAC Fuel Watch records show diesel was last cheaper than petrol 15 years ago, on 17 July 2001, so these price cuts are great news for the nation’s diesel car drivers.

“When this last happened 15 years ago, diesel was cheaper than petrol for two-and-a-half months – but with a new supply of diesel being produced from Saudi Arabia, there is real chance that we may see the diesel price staying below petrol for some considerable time.”

The AA added: “Although the supermarkets’ decision to lower the price of diesel below petrol is very welcome, this more realistic pricing has been too long in coming.

“The AA highlighted in April the 4p to 6p over-charging for diesel, compared to petrol, and it has been three-and-a-half months of the 2015 Great British Diesel Rip-Off.”

Tesco’s fuel director Peter Cattell said: “With the summer holidays beginning, we’re helping our customers to get away with their friends and families by dropping the cost of diesel by up to 2p a litre.” by Ruki Sayid. source-mirror
