FERRY DISASTER: OVER 200 PEOPLE FEARED DEAD on Lake Victoria in Tanzania after the boat capsized and began to sink and many are feared trapped in the hull..

Rescue operations will resume on Friday morning on Lake Victoria in Tanzania, where over 200 people are feared dead after the boat capsized and began to sink.

The overloaded ferry built for 105 people, reportedly had over 300 people onboard, laden with a massive load of cement bags in bad weather, and was sailing between the island of Bugolora and Ukara when it began to fall beneath the waves.

Rescue operations have so far confirmed that at least 42 people are confirmed to have drowned , when the ferry went down yesterday afternoon only a few metres from the dock in Ukerewe district with well over double the number of passengers it was built to carry but authorities can not confirm the exact number of because the person dispensing boat passenger tickets also drowned in the ferry disaster.

Tanzania has in the past had major ferry disasters including, 1996, in the same Lake Victoria region when over 500 people were killed, then in 2012, when over 145 people died in Tanzania’s semi-autonomous archipelago of Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean in an overcrowded ferry.
