Gutu Mupandawana Man, ‘Obert Mujaya ‘ (68) Rapes Granddaughter,( 3), ‘To be Rich’

A 68-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years in jail for raping his 3-year-old granddaughter on the instructions of a traditional healer. Obert Mujaya from Gutu Mupandawana Growth Point was sentenced on his own plea of guilt when he appeared before the Masvingo Magistrate Collet Ncube on Tuesday. He told the court that he raped the minor after a local traditional healer told him to bed a minor if he wanted to be rich. The magistrate said the man deserved to be locked-up for a lengthy period for the safety of children. Two years of the sentence were suspended on condition Mujaya does not commit a similar offence in the next five years, meaning he will serve 18 years effectively. Prosecutor Sophia Busvumani told the court that sometime in January this year, Mujaya told his granddaughter that she was now a grown woman and it was time to make the minor a wife. The same day, and in the absence of his wife, he led his 3 year old granddaughter to the bedroom and told her to lie on the bed, removed her skirt and panties before raping her. The court heard that Mujaya raped the minor on several occasions with the juvenile remaining silent as she had been threatened with unspecified action by the grandfather. The matter came to light when Mujaya and his wife were having marital problems. Mujaya was said to have started boasting that he no longer required sex from his wife since his granddaughter had already taken the responsibly. This angered the wife and she reported the case to the police which led to Mujaya’s arrest. The wife told the court that Mujaya once confided to her that he had plans to sleep with her granddaughter to solve his financial problems after he had consulted a traditional healer. source-newzimbabwe
