Harare Lawyer ‘Bruce Beven Mujeyi’ Deregistered For Malpractice

Justices Chinembiri Bhunu and Felistus Chatukuta, seating as the Legal Practitioners Tribunal, deregistered Harare lawyer Bruce Beven Mujeyi after several cases of malpractice were referred by the Law Society of Zimbabwe.

The LSZ, tasked with the responsibility of enforcing discipline among legal practitioners in terms of the Legal Practitioners Act Chapter 27:07, lodged an inquiry into several malpractices and abuse of a trust account by Mujeyi.

On the 24th of January in 2012, Mr Kenias Chawadya alleged that Mujeyi failed to appear at a hearing resulting in a default judgment being entered against his company in a labour dispute.

Mujeyi failed to account for US$19 000 deposited into the Deputy Sheriff’s account despite failing to represent the client. He later accepted liability and promised to reimburse client only to flee to South Africa.

In a related incident, Mujeyi in November 2011 duped Cindy Stains of Kennan Properties of US$19 000 after receiving US$30 000 meant for the payment of utility bills.

Mujeyi pleaded with the tribunal to exonerate him and give him time to reimburse the clients claiming he was under severe stress after his ex-wife had cast an evil spell on him leading to several misfortunes like accidents and the flopping of his business empire.

The tribunal found that he had no defence save to say he was a psychiatric patient not fit and proper to practise law.

It deleted him from the register of lawyers, notaries public and conveyancers, and prohibited him from operating a trust account.source-zbc
