IMPACT of Zimbabwe’s’ disastrous, white commercial farmer evictions on dairy

At independance in 1980, Zimbabwe’s annual milk production was 150 million litres, growing steadily to 256 million litres by 1990 before spiralling down to a mere 36 million litres by 2009 when the lawless, murderous, white farmer evictions from commercial farms, collapsed a vibrant Agricultural system, that at one time was the ‘bread basket of Africa’ feeding the continent but is now just a pale shadow of its former glory, a ‘basket case’ for charity, surviving on aid.

Zimbabwe is a nation which needs 10 million litres of milk per month. There are currently 223 registered dairy operators and a dairy herd of approximately 26 000 animals failing to meet the milk demand, as, only five million litres of milk per month, are produced with Milk imports making up for the massive shortfall.

Records indicate that Zimbabwe’s National milk production increased from 150 million litres in 1980, to a peak of 256 million litres in 1990 before plummeting to an all-time low of 36 million litres in 2009. By Sibusiso Ngwenya
