Jacob Ngarivhume, Transform Zimbabwe (TZ) President at Mbare Magistrates Court in solidarity with incarcerated opposition leaders and activists

Good evening Zimbabwe.

Today I was at Mbare Magistrates Court from 9AM through to 7PM.

This followed the arrest of scores of opposition leaders and activists following the successful NERA demonstration calling for electoral reforms. It was time to witness the other side of the struggle…

First to stand on the dock was Linda Masarira. She was in leg irons! Unbelievable to see an innocent mother appear in such form from remand. You could see the brute force and evil intention of the rogue regime.
Linda was remanded in custody for trial on the 28th of October.

Then came through battered opposition activists from Glen View led by their MP Hon Munengami. They were in a sorry state. The MP could hardly walk. Three women were heavily bleeding from the still fresh assault wounds. They could not sit and were lying on the floor throughout the proceedings.

Everyone in the court cried at the site of the brutally violated women. I imagined the horror they went through and I dropped some tears too. I have grown up in this environment and I know what brutality is. I cried because I could see that the regime is still determined to hold on and we need to up the game, inevitably putting our lives in harm’s way.

The third group was from Waterfalls/Hatfield. Part of the team I addressed on Sat. Several were from our party Transform Zimbabwe and the rest from MDCT. They were all horribly assaulted and some suffered major wounds. One had huge visible scars allover his face.

Interestingly the state prosecutor opposed bail in ALL the cases. Despite the overwhelming need for bail to enable them to go to hospital the state opposed with unbelievable ignorance and arrogance.

The bail ruling has been set for tomorrow 20 September 11AM.

I cried throughout the proceedings. I fully appreciate the price our people pay daily for freedom. I imagine the horror the women suffered at the hands of the police.

Surely we must never forget that sacrifice. Freedom does not come cheap. Every time we call for these demos, we must be prepared to pay that price.

Is this the Zimbabwe va Chitepo fought for? Is this the Zimbabwe baba Joshua Nkomo cherished?

God bless our nation. Our resolve is unshakable.

Jacob Ngarivhume
President, TZ
