LUNGU declares 25/10/19, Zambia’s holiday, 55th Independence anniversary the previous day, not anti sanctions solidarity
This flies in the face of Zimbabwean authorities who expect Sadc countries to join them on the day in solidarity against targeted sanctions by the United States and the European Union.
In a Sadc summit in Tanzania in August, Sadc countries agreed to set aside 25 October and embark in various activities to support calls to lift the sanctions against Zimbabwe.
Lungu, however poured water on the vent by extending his country’s independence celebrations in an apparent snub to Zimbabwe.
“As we prepare to celebrate our 55th Independence Anniversary on 24th Oct, this year, I have declared Friday 25th Oct a public holiday to give citizens enough time to reflect on our duties and obligations as citizens of this great nation,” said Lungu.
Zimbabwe blames the United States and the United Kingdom of imposing “illegal and punitive” sanctions on the tea pot shaped nation which authorities attribute to the country’s economic collapse.
The US has on the other hand pointed to maladministration, corruption and human rights abuses by the Zimbabwean government as a major contributing factor to the country’s misfortunes.- Byo24
