MALAWI’S EX PRESIDENT JOYCE BANDA, , the second woman to lead an African country, returned to Malawi today , Saturday 28/04/18 at mid day after spending four years in self-imposed exile.

In 2012, the brother to the current Malawi president Mutharika the late Bingu wa Mutharika died in office and Joyce Banda rose to power. She became president to Malawi, rated one of the Globe’s poorest and aid-dependent countries.
 
Joyce Banda fled from Malawi in 2014 after losing power due to the biggest financial scandal in Malawi’s history and spend most of her time in exile in the United States. She had been caught up in the infamous Cashgate scandal, where Malawi government officials allegedly looted millions of public funds. Foreign donors made up approximately 40 percent of Malawi’s budget , but because of the Cashgate scandal , they withdrew approximately $150 million worth of foreign aid.
 
However the World Bank in May 2017 resumed aid to the broke Malawi government with an $80 million aid package after the government had implemented neccessary reforms.reform.
 
She was said to be destined straight for her home at Domasi in Zomba, about 80 kilometres (50 miles) away from the airport though she has returned to Malawi , a country where she risks being arrested on corruption allegations.
 
Joyce Banda who, founded the People’s Party (PP) in 2011 had an arrest warrant issued in July 2017 for her and it still remains valid, though police have not said whether or not they will arrest her.
 
In 2018 , the Malawi Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) acknowledged that it had no concrete evidence of corruption against the ex president Joyce Banda president. By Sibusiso Ngwenya. More news to follow.
