Matabeleland South Provincial Administrator Forced To Resign, 4 months Into His Renewed Contract

MATABELELAND South provincial administrator, Midard Khumalo, has been forced to resign by the Public Service Commission (PSC), four months into his contract that had been extended by a year.

Khumalo was appointed in 2012 as the top civil servant in Matabeleland South following the death of David Mpofu in a road accident.

Khumalo, who previously worked as the district administrator for Umzingwane, confirmed to The Chronicle yesterday that his contract was supposed to expire in December, but was told by the PSC to leave with immediate effect without notice.

“I retired last year and my contract was extended to expire at the end of this year. However, I received a letter from the PSC dated April 15 advising me to relinquish my duties with immediate effect,” Khumalo told The Chronicle.

“I wasn’t told the reason why they’re doing that nor do I know any reason why they did so. I just assumed that a contract is terminated at any time.” He said he was now going to venture into farming full time.

“I’ll go home and have a lot of activities to do. I’ll look after my animals, raise cattle and goats. I’m now becoming a full time farmer,” he said. Khumalo on Tuesday wrote to government departments, the police, prisons and army in Matabeleland South notifying them of his departure.

He stated in the letter: “Please be advised that the undersigned Mr M Khumalo is retiring from service from the date of signing this note. I wish to extend my sincere appreciation for the wonderful time we had together. Together, we have seen the province move forward in numerous dimensions in pursuit of the goals of ZimAsset.

“We have made great achievements as the Provincial Development Committee and I wish to compliment you for that commitment and dedication to development causes of our province Matabeleland South. Your team spirit has enabled us to go this far. In that light, let me say thank you very much to you all and may the Lord guard and guide your efforts always.”

There was speculation in the province that Khumalo would be replaced by Insiza District Administrator, Sithandiwe Ndumo-Ncube, but that could not be immediately confirmed.
