MDC National Youth Assembly Chairperson Has Been Arrested For Refusing To Pay A US$40 Bribe.

The MDC National Youth Assembly Chairman, Gidion Mandaza has been arrested and both his car and drivers’ license impounded by St Mary’s Traffic cops in Chitungwiza today for refusing to pay a $40 bribe.

An argument arose when Sgt Muchemwa and his colleague based at St Mary’s Police Station traffic
section stopped Mr Mandaza at a road block 30m away from the police station. After a thorough inspection, Mr Mandaza was advised that the 3rd number plate of his car has been tempered with and as such,he was supposed to give them $40 or risk his vehicle being impounded, to which he refused resulting in a serious scuffle with the two corrupt cops.

We are extremely disturbed by the incident which has exposed the high levels of mercenarism characterising our police force especially the traffic cops who have become vampires to motorists and soldiers of fortune in the country.

We condemn in strongest terms such conduct from the law enforcing agents who should wield public confidence at any given time according to the police charter.Incidences of corruption in the country have overtaken the HIV prevalence rate and as such must be declared a national disaster.

Corruption has been on the increase despite the Zimbabwe Republic Police having partnered other institutions in the justice delivery system during the ‘Against Corruption Together(ACT)’ launch this year. The avowal by the national spokesperson of the ZRP, Charity Charamba that the institution is committed to fighting corruption seems to be the guttural rantings of a nocturnal animal as the behavior and conduct of the police has reaffirmed to the contrary.

We kindly urge the Commissioner of police, Augustine Chihuri to urgently address the situation as the will and power of the citizens has always been the victor when the question of who will police the police has been answered.
