MDC-T Senior Official Ex-Masvingo Mayor, Alderman Fermius Chakabuda, Has Died.

MASVINGO: MDC-T senior official and former mayor for Masvingo City, Alderman Fermius Chakabuda, has died.

Chakabuda collapsed at his Morning Side house in the early hours of Tuesday and was rushed to Makurira Memorial Clinic where he was pronounced dead.

He was 64 and is survived by his wife and four children.

Alderman Chakabuda served as a ward 5 Councillor in Masvingo for 18 years both on a Zanu PF and MDC-T ticket.

His wife Margret Ckakabuda confirmed the death and said the former mayor collapsed while bathing and was rushed to the clinic where he died on arrival.

“He woke up this morning and told me that he was taking a bath,” said his wife.

“He later collapsed while bathing and we took him to hospital where he died on arrival.”

Chakabuda joined politics in 1972. He left the country to Sierra Leone in West Africa from where he helped recruit youths to join the liberation war.

While in Sierra Leon he obtained a bachelor of Accountancy degree.

In 1996, he was elected Councillor in ward five on a Zanu PF ticket but dumped the party in 2002 to join MDC-T where he occupied several posts, among them provincial treasurer and secretary.

From 2009 to 2013 he was the president of the Urban Councils Association of Zimbabwe UCAZ.

He retired from active politics in 2013 to pursue his business interests within Masvingo.

Mourners are gathered at his Morningside home in Masvingo.
