Military To Monitor 540 Private Airstrips, Suspected Of Animal Trophy & Mineral Smuggling

Zimbabwe Parliament is set to probe 540 private airstrips which are suspected of being used to smuggle out animal trophies and mineral.

About 350 private aircrafts are registered in the country and are mainly owned by miners and safari operators.

According to Transport and Infrastructure portfolio committee chairman, Dexter Nduna investigations will kick start at Buffalo Range Airport in Chiredzi.

“We suspect there is a daily occurrence of such crimes at airstrips that are not registered with the Civil Aviation Association of Zimbabwe.

” To curtail this, we are advocating that out civilian radar systems be complemented by the military radar system to detect aircraft using these illegal airstrips”.

“We are in the process of identifying and monitoring these airstrips”.
