More Jobless Graduates As Mugabe Caps 3 451 University of Zimbabwe Graduands

A total of 3 451 graduands from the University of Zimbabwe have been conferred with doctorates, masters of philosophy and first degrees by President Robert Mugabe, who is the Chancellor of the institution.

Among the undergraduates, there are 91 medical doctors, seven dentists, 50 pharmacists, 124 engineers, 93 agricultural experts, 389 accountants and 136 lawyers.

The Diamond Jubilee graduation, which is coinciding with celebrations to mark the institution’s 60 years of service, has a record 101 graduands from the nine faculties being awarded first class passes and 635 post graduate being capped by the President.

The total number of this year’s graduands include 2 812 undergraduates, 602 masters, 18 master of philosophy and 14 doctor of philosophy graduands.

In his speech, UZ Vice Chancellor, Professor Levi Nyagura, says the institution is targeting to be among the top 10 best universities in Africa by 2017 and to that end 90% of the academic staff is expected to be in possession of a PhD qualification by 2017.

He applauded the government for its commitment in developing and sustaining institutions of higher learning in the country, saying the investments by the government are yielding enviable results across the African continent and beyond.

Notable among this year’s graduation were the Chairperson of the Gender Commission, Mrs Margaret Sangarwe, who is also a University of Zimbabwe council member, musician Energy Mutodi and a legislator, Fani Munengami

The colourful graduation and Diamond Jubilee celebrations were attended by the Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development, Professor Jonathan Moyo, government officials, ambassadors accredited to Zimbabwe and captains of industry among other eminent personalities.Source – zbc
