Mugabe Says ‘Zimbabwe Will Press SouthAfrica For Deeper Investigations Into Zanele’s Death’

President Robert Mugabe says Zimbabwe will keep pressing the South African authorities to go deeper with investigations to determine the cause of Zanele Moyo’s death.

Zanele, daughter to the Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development, Professor Jonathan Moyo, was found dead in her off campus apartment in Cape Town, South Africa where she was pursuing studies in political science, international relations and gender studies at University of Cape Town.

Her body arrived this Wednesday afternoon and now awaits burial on Friday afternoon.

Mugabe, who visited the Moyo home in Borrowdale this evening, commended Zanele’s parents for doing their best to ensure that their daughter would have a good life but that was not to be because God had his own plans.

“We will continue pressing for the South African officers to give us a satisfactory answer regarding this incident. It is disturbing from Professor Moyo’s narration of how events unfolded in South Africa, that a post mortem result can take over 5 years and that the person who was last seen with Zanele decided to leave her dying alone, alleging that he had to travel to Zambia,” he said.

President Mugabe also said it is also disturbing that the authorities did not take immediate action when the friend who last saw Zanele alive was spotted at OR Tambo International Airport on the domestic side on Tuesday night when he had said he was going to Zambia.

Professor Moyo had earlier briefed the President on what transpired on the trip regarding post mortem

Two Zambian nationals are expected to help police with the investigations.

Meanwhile, Zanele’s body landed at the Harare International Airport this Wednesday afternoon accompanied by Professor Moyo, his son in law Tawanda Wakatama, family friend Phillip Chiyangwa and family lawyer Mr Terence Hussein.

Simon Khaya Moyo, Saviour Kasukuwere, Patrick Zhuwawo, Godfrey Gandawo, Dr Obert Mpofu and Ambassador Mapuranga were at hand to welcome the grief stricken Professor Moyo.

Other relatives, friends and some Borrowdale community members, who included neighbour Mrs Marry Chiwenga and Mrs Kasukuwere in the company of Professor Moyo’s wife, Beatrice, waited in the airport VIP Lounge to receive Professor Moyo with songs and sobs while an aunt fainted at the sight of the father of the deceased before she even greeted him.

From the airport, the body of the late Zanele was taken to Nyaradzo Funeral Parlour where it will be kept overnight before being taken to the family home where it will lie in state on Thursday night.

She will be buried at 2.pm at Glen Forest Cemetery on Friday.

Mourners are gathered at number 7 Rosary Close in Borrowdale.
