Welshman Ncube: Myanmar dictatorship fall new hope for Zimbabwe

OPPOSITION MDC leader Welshman Ncube has said Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi’s electoral triumph and the prospect of democracy in Myanmar gives Zimbabweans hope that “people power will always prevail in the end”.

“Having suffered under the dictatorship of President Robert Mugabe for the last 34 –years, your victory is a reminder to the people of Zimbabwe that people power will always prevail in the end,” Ncube said in a congratulatory message to the Myanmar opposition leader.

Suu Kyi, Nobel peace prize winner in 1991 and her National League for Democracy (NLD) party, won the 1990 general elections only for the result to be nullified by the Southeast Asia nation’s military dictatorship.

Suu Kyi was then placed under house arrest for the next 15 years, becoming one of the world’s most prominent political prisoners.

Her party has however won new elections held last weekend, claiming 90 percent of the vote but the NLD leader is barred from becoming president because becoming president by a constitutional hurdle inserted by the junta which disqualifies those with “foreign children”.

Military ruler, President Thein Sein has however, congratulated Suu Kyi’s opposition party on its success in polls.

Ncube, industry minister under the former coalition government, said her victory has strengthened the resolve of the pro-democracy movement in Zimbabwe.

“As you embark upon your new responsibilities, we wish to assure you and the people of Myamnar of the continued support and sympathetic interest of the Movement for Democratic Change leadership and the people of Zimbabwe,” he said.

“For us, your victory has not only strengthened our resolve for attaining democracy in the midst of dictatorship, oppression and violence, but serves as validation of our conviction that all the forces in the world are not so powerful as an idea whose time has come.

“We look forward to working with you not only to develop closer relations between our parties and ultimately countries, when we also emerge victorious in our quest for democracy but also to concert our efforts in the cause of peace and the brotherhood of all peoples.”by UK Bureau source-newzimbabwe
