SUNSHINE AND SMILES, a charity that provides a support network in Leeds for children and young people who have Down syndrome and their families.

A UK Headingly Leeds based charity ,   parent led and overseen by a team of four trustees with four paid workers, a service manager and three support workers, a year ago received an £8,000 grant from The Wesleyan Foundation,  and opened the Café 21 project which has been able to open its doors and train young adults with Down’s syndrome to run a café in Headingly Leeds  . The project run by Sunshine & Smiles, a Leeds charity that supports young people with Down’s syndrome and their families aim to provide young people with new skills, confidence and independence, improve the lives and opportunities for children and young people with Down’s syndrome, through the experience of helping to run a local community café.

The Leeds café is staffed by people aged between 18 and 24 with Down’s syndrome and changing lives and challenging preconceptions, thanks to financial support received from The Wesleyan Foundation.

Café 21 opened on 12 January 2019 and was created by the charity Sunshine & Smiles in a bid to help young people with the genetic condition get work experience and training that will boost their career prospects. The cafe will be open from Thursday to Sunday for at least six months .

The charity aims to improve the lives and opportunities for children and young people with Down syndrome. Speech and language therapy, regular groups and activities, individual support and advocacy for families, as well as raising awareness and challenging preconceptions in the wider community are all offered by the charity.

According to UK National statistics only 17 per cent of all adults with a learning disability are in paid employment.

Sunshine & Smiles aims to improve the lives and opportunities for children and young people with Down’s syndrome who have different set of responsibilities open to them depending on their preferences.

Some of the children and young want to be customer-facing, others prefer doing stock taking or working in the back and there is so much involved, giving them great learning opportunity in customer service. The children and young can add health and safety training among other transferable skills they learn, to their CVs, effectively boosting their career prospects.

To ensure that the support network is sustainable in the long term and that the charity can continue to provide support and activities, they rely on donations, grants and support from people like you through numerous ways such as volunteering at any of the numerous events or donations on their Local Giving Page. source- sunshine and smiles
