Tajamuka/Sesjikile leader Mkwananzi to hand himself over to Harare Central over last week’s #ShutdownZimbabwe protests.
Earlier this week Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi told the state owned Herald that they wanted to interview Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) president Peter Mutasa, activist Promise Mkwananzi and some MDC Alliance party members in connection with last week’s #ShutdownZimbabwe protests.
“How they wish that I flee the country so that it appears as if I am a fugitive from justice thus criminalise me and delegitimise the people’s cause.” Mkwananzi said. “That will not happen. At the appropriate time, in consultation with my lawyers and advisors, I will go to Harare central police to find out what they want to interview me in connection with. I am innocent and have not committed any crime.”
ZCTU President Peter Mutasa who handed himself to the police on Friday was formally charged for subverting a constitutional government alternatively inciting public violence by circulating a video calling for stay away. He is detained at Harare Central police station. He is expected to appear in court on Saturday.
Police and soldiers are on an operation to restore law and order in the Western suburbs since last week.
The operation follows violent protests that rocked the country on January 14.
Five opposition MPs have been arrested, 12 people confirmed dead from gunshots with hundreds being treated for gunshot wounds while thousands are in remand prison countrywide.
