BREAKING NEWS:ZIMBABWE LAWYERS FOR HUMAN RIGHTS SAY THE MDC ALLIANCE PRINCILAL TENDAI BITI IS IN HARARE CENTRAL POLICE CID CUSTODY

Zambia defied a court order to allow Zimbabwe’s former finance ministerTendai Biti to seek asylum in that country and handed him over to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), where he is likely to spend the whole weekend in remand custody .
 
Biti a former Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) leader, escaped to Zambia, to claim asylum as he fled charges of inciting post-election violence.
 
Although, initially Zambian authorities denied Biti asylum, Biti’s legal team fought the decision, to keep him safe i in Zambia, but Zambian authorities ignored the court ruling and went on to deport Tendai Biti who is now on the Zimbabwean side, in the custody of the Zimbabwe CID Law and Order Section at Harare Central Police Station
 
The Zambia’s High Court, wil still go ahead to hold a hearing where Biti was supposed to appear, on Thursday even though he will be absent.
 
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed Tendai Biti arrest, saying, he is being charged for contravening Section 36 of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act Chapter 9.23 on public violence and also contravening Section 66 1(a) of the Electoral Act Chapter 2.13 – unofficial or fake declaration of results in the 30 July 2018 harmonised elections.More news to follow. Tendai Biti appeared in court and was charged for inciting violence and illegally announcing results of the 30 july 2018 Harmonised elections in Zimbabwe.
 
Bail was setat USS$5000 and , as condition of bail, Biti must surrender his passport, title deeds, not interfere with witnesses, musn’t address any political gathering and reports to CID twice a day, in the morning and in the evening. More news to follow.
