Bulawayo city (koNtuthuziyathunqa), residents are up in arms with power utility Zesa’s plans to “demolish” two of the old cooling towers at the Bulawayo Power Station

‘ZESA TO DEMOLISH to demolish Bulawayo city (koNtuthuziyathunqa), Power Station towers’ BULAWAYO residents are up in arms with power utility Zesa’s plans to “demolish” two of the old cooling towers at the Bulawayo Power Station in acity which has seen shocking revelations lately including that the council did not own Bulawayo city council Tower block, then later realising that Bulawayo City Council does not have title deeds for some of its important buildings like the Tower Block and City Hall as well as the city’s water dams now the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority has issued a licence to the Zimbabwe Power Company for the Bulawayo Power Station even though the Bulawayo City Council, had objected to the application saying they were the owners of the power station and effectively residents of Bulawayo.
.The iconic Bulawayo power station towers, commissioned between 1947 and 1957and archaeological consultant Rob Burrett, who is also an associate researcher with the Natural History Museum of Zimbabwe, felt the towers should be painted and transformed into a tourist attraction.
“They are an essential part of the Bulawayo landscape; they relate to the traditional name from the city (koNtuthuziyathunqa), and I really cannot see why they are being taken down. In Johannesburg, the old cooling towers have been painted and transformed into a tourist attraction. This would be significant if it were done in Bulawayo,” he said. newsday
This week we also reported that Air Zimbabwe is to review its landing rights particularly for Matebeleland North, Bulawayo and Victoria Falls International Airport, and force all international flights into the Zimbabwe to be rerouted to Harare Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport from Victoria Falls International Airport and Bulawayo city thereby develop Harare (the RGM International Airport) into a regional hub, as other airlines fly direct into Victoria Falls, into Bulawayo currently and allow tourists to spend on hotels and other tourist investments there instead of Harare.
Remember that in 2016 on www.newzimbabwevision.com news, I reported that the exiled former Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Saviour Kasukuwere, under the deposed former president Robert Mugabe had identified 318 hectares of land for the construction of between 10,000 and 20,000 high density residential stands for Zanu pf youths in Bulawayo.
Saviour Kasukuwere toured Umvutsha Farm in Greater Bulawayo where houses would be constructed with building to commence by the end of 2016 as plans had been put in place for the construction of the first phase of the township.
The then Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Permanent Secretary Engineer George Mlilo, Bulawayo’s Minister of State for Provincial Affairs, Nomthandazo Eunice Moyo and the Bulawayo City Council had been tasked by the exiled former Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Saviour Kasukuwere to identify land. Kasukuwere revealed on that tour, that the next stage included availing another 600 hectares of land for further development for residential stands, four secondary schools, seven primary schools, four pre-schools, three flats, a recreational site, clinics, churches and commercial sites, in aprogramme designed for Zanu pf youths only. According to Kasukuwere, project offices had been put in place already in Bulawayo city centre for this project. He said before acrowd including the then Minister of State in Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko’s office, Tabetha Kanengoni Malinga, Urban Development Corporation General Manager Bright Mudzova and Urban Development Corporation board member, Absalom Sikhosana amongst others.
Zimbabweans saw how Mugabe’s nephew Phillip Chiyangwa crushed Bulawayo business and employment with the Affirmative Action Group, AAG and now the Bulawayo Cold Storage Commission is equally in a mess with ‘false investments’ Everything shows a relentless drive at subjugating Matebeleland instead of giving everyone all races, tribes, religions and languages across Matebeleland through all these covert government backed schemes and policies. We already know that early learners in school are sruggling with their mother language Ndebele as the Ministry of Education floods the schools with non Ndebele speakers to develop the early learners when they cant read, write , speak or understand the language. This is clearly jeorpadising the future of the early learners and killing the Ndebele language, culture and identity as they are subjugated and assimilated. DISCUSS! More news to follow.
