Court Clears MDC-T Bulawayo For Demo Against Economic Decline, Poverty & Corruption On Saturday (28/o5/16).
Opposition MDC-T Bulawayo province planned demonstration has been given a green light by the High Court to go ahead.
The demo is set to Saturday (28). More than 10 000 people are set to participate.
“Our demo is going ahead on May 28. The courts have said reasons given by the police to block it are insufficient and baseless”, James Sithole, the party’s organising secretary for Bulawayo province said this evening.
The party had taken Home Affairs Minister Ignatius Chombo and Police Commissioner Augustine Chihuri to court challenging the police’s decision to bar its planned demonstration.
Sithole said they have been energised to mobilize members.
“We are looking at 10 000 provincial members and other residents to take part.
“The success will be measured by attendance and peacefulness. We are a peaceful party.
“Police had claimed it will be violent that is not true’, he said.
In its founding affidavit, MDC-T said the planned protest dubbed, “March against poverty and corruption”, sought to bring to the fore the MDC-T’s position on the declining socio-economic and political conditions in the country through a “peaceful.”
“Top of the priority of the issues of the planned peaceful protest is the rampant and alarming levels of corruption wherein US$15 billon reportedly mysteriously went missing from the government coffers, escalating poverty, acute cash shortages and poor service delivery among other pressing issues while the government is seemingly taking a lackadaisical approach in tackling these issues,” said Sithole.
