CAPE TOWN – Police in South Africa have confirmed that there were no injuries on the body of higher education minister Jonathan Moyo’s daughter.
Zanele Ntombizodwa Moyo, a 20-year-old University of Cape Town (UCT) student, died before her body was found in her flat last Saturday morning.
Close friends told Nehanda Radio that Zanele, who had a long history of alcohol abuse, was found fully clothed and slumped face down in a bathtub.
“She fell in the bath, was concussed and died. Apparently she had an alcohol problem and was in rehab last year. She liked bathing whenever she was drunk,” our source said.
Speaking in Harare before he had left for Cape Town, minister Moyo claimed that his daughter was found with “an injury to her forehead and there was blood on the floor”.South Africa police spokesman Frederick van Wyk has however contradicted that version and said Zanele’s body had no signs of external injuries.
Zanele’s body has since been released to minister Moyo who is in South Africa with family members and flamboyant businessman Philip Chiyangwa.
Chiyangwa claimed to have “activated” his contacts in South Africa and Zambia to track down a man known as Stephen who was last seen with Zanele.
“He told me that he was not running away, but was in Zambia to bury his father. He promised to hand himself over to Cape Town police by Friday.
“I made him call the investigating officer to repeat that promise and I hope for his sake he’s not selling us a dummy because I’ve means to extract him from Zambia should he fail to return to Cape Town,” Chiyangwa said.
“It is common cause that South African police have quite a lot on their plate when it comes to crime and investigations. We’ve full confidence in the police, but where we can help we won’t hesitate – just like any parent would do,” he said. By nehanda
