‘OVER 80 Zimbabwe doctors who snubbed disciplinary hearings today after three months strike have been fired by Mnangagwa’
The President Emmerson Mnangagwa government has reportedly fired more than 80 doctors who snubbed disciplinary hearings sitting at central hospitals in Harare and Bulawayo on Friday to try them over their job action which is running into three months.
Sources revealed that the decision to fire the health workers was made after none of the doctors presented themselves before the panels in Harare and Bulawayo.
Health Service Board (HSB) chairperson Paulinus Sikosana said the panels came with the verdict on the cases despite the doctors absenting themselves.
He declined however t confirm that the doctors had been sacked citing employer/employee confidentiality.
“The verdict will be shared with the people in question,” he said.
The job action by the doctors stemmed from poor salaries and poor working conditions.
Things got worse when Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association acting chairperson Dr Peter Mugombeyi was allegedly abducted by state security agents for leading the strike.
Western embassies and opposition parties launched a campaign for the release of Mugombeyi who was later found stranded and disoriented in Mazowe, Mashonaland Central.
Acting health minister Monica Mutsvangwa said government will withhold salaries for all striking doctors and only those who reported for duty would be paid their dues. Byo24
