ZIMBABWE’S WEEKLY ACCIDENT UPDATE: at least three people have been killed and dozens injured after a ZUPCO bus skidded off the Bulawayo-Gwanda road near Chipangali Wildlife Sanctuary
In a frequent occurrance, typically dangerous driving by bus drivers, the suspected speeding driver of a Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (Zupco) bus travelling from Beitbridge to Bulawayo over 300km away, lost control of the bus, skidded off the road allegedly due to a slippery, wet road surface because of light showers on approaching a sharp curve.
The vehicle overturned and two women and a male passenger died on the spot at around 5PM yesterday at the 25km peg along the Bulawayo-Gwanda road near Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage.
It is standard knowledge by drivers that one must drive with caution along the well signposted, hilly, curving road at the Bulawayo-Gwanda road near Chipangali Wildlife Sanctuary. A slippery road in rain is no excuse for a bus being involved in an accident. A professional driver would have recognised possible dangers way ahead of the accident, such as curves, winding uphill road, slow traffic, overtaking vehicles, cyclists, wild animals, broken down vehicles, scotchcarts, diminished visibility because of rainfall, a slippery surface due to rainfall, and instead driven, according to prevailing conditions instead of targeting the speed limit. This would have automatically meant slowing the vehicle down and proceeding safely past this area,..well known zone in Bulawayo and commonly and appropriately referred to as the ‘DANGER AREA’. There is no excuse for a professional driver being involved in an accident in this area or any area at all. Sibusiso Ngwenya
