Canada’s new human rights code sparks fear of Bible verse ban from Christian school
Recent changes to the human rights code in Canada has sparked fears that Bible verses will be banned from Christian schools, as the passages could be seen as offensive to certain minorities.
The Battle River School Division in Camrose has asked the Cornerstone Christian Academy Society in Kingman to remove two Biblical passages from the new edition of its student handbook and replace them with different verses. The Christian school thought the division was stepping beyond its boundaries but complied with the request, Metro News detailed.
However, the academy’s board chair Deanna Margel feared that the school division would now control the Bible verses that they can teach to students and ban the ones deemed “offensive” from the classroom. She said the move was tantamount to a violation of their freedom because it limits their freedom of expression, freedom of speech, and freedom of religion.
One of the Bible passages in question was that of 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, which said the “sexually immoral” and men who have sexual relations with men, among many others, cannot inherit God’s kingdom. For Diane Hutchinson of the Battle River School Division, these passages could be deemed offensive to certain people, given the recent changes to their human rights law.
The two parties are set to discuss the issue in a meeting on June 25. Hutchinson said they could either reach an agreement with the Christian school or cut their ties with it.
Meanwhile in Ontario, pro-family advocates have raised concern over a newly passed bill which could allow the state to take children from their families if their parents oppose the LGBT agenda. Bill 89, or the Supporting Children, Youth and Families Act of 2017, could also ban these couples from becoming foster or adoptive parents if they do not support the agenda, Life Site News reported.
Bill 89 replaces the former Child and Family Service Act to add “gender identity” and “gender expression” under things to be considered in the child’s best interests. The new legislation also removes parents’ religious faith from the list of the said factors.
Campaign Life Coalition senior political strategist Jack Fonseca described the bill as “totalitarian” and a serious threat to Christians and other people of faith. Parents As First Educators president Tanya Granic Allen said she was disappointed with the passing of the bill and noted that the Kathleen Wynne Liberals have been trying to promote anti-family agenda for many years now. source christiandaily
