over 80 People Die In Nigeria From Lassa Fever Outbreak
The world is now on full alert and full speed ahead in the race to find a cure for the generally unknown Mosquito borne Zika virus , yet in West Africa there is an ongoing Lassa Fever outbreak in Nigeria, which has reportedly led to the death of over 80 people.
The World Health Organization (WHO) indicates that, the lassa virus which is of the safe family of viruses such as the deadly Ebola and photo-images of Lassa virus-gistfactory generally is symptomless. Lassa fever victims, can suffer fevers, vomiting, acute haemorrhaging or internal bleeding and at times the death of sufferers.
Lassa fever is a virus spread by rodents waste in food. Victims contract it in west Africa through contact with food or household items that are contaminated with the affected rodent’s faeces and urine, human contact , bodily fluids transmission,especially in third world style hospitals which lack safe and proper infection control.
This virus,Lassa fever, a rat waste borne virus, is appropriately named after a northern Nigeria town of Lassa where it was first identified , way back in 1969. The Nigerian government hopes the outbreak will be over soon if good sanitation, good hygeine and fumigation of rat infested areas should bring the situation under control soon. By Sibusiso Ngwenya.
