Bulawayo City Council councilors all MDC-T members owe the municipality a whooping US$662 299.78

Bulawayo City Council councillors all MDC-T members owe the municipality a whooping US$662 299.78 for inappropriate land deals, a probe report reveals.

Last week, Local government minister Saviour Kasukuwere suspended five councilors, led by deputy Mayor Gift Banda, accused of being the most corrupt lot.

The other four suspended councilors are James Sithole, Mzama Dube, Charles Moyo and Reuben Matengu.

According to the a report seen by Bulawayo24.com,  Kasukuwere said “there was public outcry about general observation of councilors who were amassing large tracts of land and some of them at below market value”.

“Out of the 29 Councilors, only 5 had not benefited directly from the council from the period stretching from 2013 to date. It should be noted that most of these property accumulations have taken place from May 2015 to date.”Generally the councilors are not paying for the acquired properties and those that they are also leasing in violation of council regulations and provisions. Council is owed a cumulative amount of US$662 299.78.

“Council has lost US$3 278 in terms of rented leases which were offered to councillors but have not yet commenced paying for the monthly rental” reads part of the report.
