ZIMBABWE HIGH COURT DISMISSES People’s Democratic Party (PDP) former Finance minister Tendai Biti’s attempt to force the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) to change the style of the ballot paper for the presidential candidates

ZIMBABWE HIGH COURT DISMISSES People’s Democratic Party (PDP) former Finance minister Tendai Biti’s attempt to force the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) to change the style of the ballot paper for the presidential candidates in the forthcoming Harmonised general elections set for Monday 30 July 2018.

The High Court judge Justice David Mangota dismissed PDP’s application on Thursday 26 June 2018 on the grounds that the application was devoid of merit.

Biti- had petitioned the High court, for an order declaring that the 30 June 2018 ballot paper’s design was inconsistent with the Constitution of Zimbabwe, the Electoral Act and the principal electoral regulations and it should be altered.

Furthermore, PDP was seeking an order to have the presidential ballot paper redesigned in a style prescribed by Zimbabwe’s law, where the 124 political parties candidates names are listed in alphabetical order on the ballot and also sought an order to stop the electoral body Zec from posting ballot papers for the 2018 presidential election to applicants who had applied for postal voting.

Justice Mangota dismissed the Tendai Biti PDP application with costs, claiming that Zec had acted within the confines of Zimbabwe’s law. By Sibusiso Ngwenya, More news to follow.
