Fifty NUST students arrested in protests against a month long lecturer strike in protest against over crowding in lecture theatres, shortage of chemicals in science labs and other issues in disputes with the management .
Bulawayo National University of Technology and Science (NUST) lecturers went on strike about amonth ago, leaving students with no lectures for a month.
Yesterday NUST was brought to a complete shut down by the students in protest over the lecturer strike, with access through University gates blocked and the Bulawayo Gwanda highway that runs past the University, also blocked off by the protesting students by students by 07:00 hrs after a spirited campaign across social media by students calling for people to joiin in the strike.
The police stepped in and used water cannons mounted on anti riot vehicles to disperse the protesting students and a total of 50 students were arrested.
The lecturers were protesting over various issues including over crowding in lecture theatres, shortage of chemicals in science labs and other issues in disputes with the management and the impasse forced the lectures to hold amonth long all tools down protest which then resulted in the student protest, police involvement and arrests of 50 students.
