Two Pupils Killed And One Criticallly Injured By Car At Sunningdale Primary School Gate

Recently Zimbabwe was shaken by the death of a Girl’s High school pupil who was knocked down by a commuter omnibus.

Just when people were slowly coming to terms with this tragedy, another heart rending development has occured, in which a car driver reportedly lost control of his vehicle and knocked down three pupils near Sunningdale primary school gates.

Two of the victims, died on the spot, while a third is in Intensive care in hospital.

The offending vehicle is reportedly a Toyota Avensis, AEE1734, which was driven by a Chitungwiza Unit L man, Ben Kabudura, heading from town towards Chitungwiza.

Kabudura who is said to have been driving at excessive speed, initially encroached into oncoming traffic lane before encroaching onto the cycle track and losing control.

The resultant confusion, saw pedestrians flee for dear life but, sadly, the three primary school pupils were knocked down by the vehicle.

This is further evidence of the lack of road safety around sensitive areas such as schools. At the very least, there should be non vehicle traffic areas, traffic control systems such as pedestrian control officials, pedestrian control lights, , speed humps, speed cameras, regular traffic police patrols and swift response by the police to any reports of dangerous driving in such areas.

It took, a powerful protest by the Girls High school pupils and fellow school to push the police into swiftly locating the escaped driver who knocked down the Girls high pupil, from Polokwane in South Africa where he had hoped to hide from the law. More news to follow. By Sibusiso Ngwenya
