Zanu-PF Manicaland Youth League Chairperson Kelvin Manyengavana Is Suspended

A leaked tape of a meeting between a Politburo member and some youths has led to the suspension of Zanu-PF Manicaland youth league chairperson Kelvin Manyengavana following a vote of no confidence passed yesterday. He was suspended with immediate effect for gross violation of the ruling party’s constitution.

The vote of no confidence was announced by his deputy, Mubuso Chinguno who was flanked by the secretary for legal affairs, Taurai Chiripamberi and secretary for security, Rinashe Chinamasa at the party’s provincial offices last night. This follows a meeting by the youth league executive held at the provincial administrator’s office where 25 members signed the petition.

Manyengavana refused to comment. Chinguno said they resolved to suspend Manyengavana after he led some members to a clandestine meeting at the house of a Politburo member (name supplied) recorded by one of the people in attendance. “Manyengavana’s conduct, incites indiscipline, disunity and factionalism among party youths and is intolerable. His conduct is already alienating Manicaland provincial youth league from the national Youth League executive.

“Effectively Manyengavana is creating his own parallel structures, as evidenced from his recorded statements to serve a personal agenda contrary to the aims and objectives of the Youth League.

“His utterances in the recorded clandestine meeting show that he has not conducted ‘himself honestly and honourably in his dealings with the party’ as mandated in Article 21 (5) of the constitution. Such conduct has put Zanu-PF’s Youth League and the party into disrepute,” said Chinguno.

He said the Youth League had lost confidence in Manyengava’s leadership.

“We have lost faith and confidence in the leadership of the provincial chairperson who clearly exhibits divisive tendencies. Certainly he is no longer capable of unifying the youths in Manicaland to ensure that we defend the party and achieve its objectives,” he said.

Chinguno added: “We believe that there is one centre of power in President Mugabe and ably supported by the chairperson of the Women’s League, Amai Dr Grace Mugabe. It seems our chairman was being used by some senior officials to create parallel structures.

“The 45-minute recording reveals a plot to work against Central Committee members. The contents clearly suggest that Manyengavana is now disregarding instructions from the national executive.”

He said in the recording, Manyengavana openly admitted to have defied the instruction of mobilising the Youth League to help in campaigning for the party in the Dangamvura-Chikanga and Headlands by-elections. by Cletus Mushanawani. Source: the herald
