Zimbabwe Has Lost Six Rhinos To Poachers Over The Last 15 Months

Zimbabwe has lost six rhinos to poachers in the last 15 months leading to calls for better strategies tin protecting endangered species.

Zimbabwe will this Tuesday join the rest of the world in commemorating World Rhino Day amid concerns over the increase in poaching activities.

The rhino is an endangered species but from June 2014 to date, Zimbabwe lost six rhinos to poachers.

Zimbabwe is now left with only 766 black and white rhinos.

“The low figures call for all Zimbabweans to be involved in creating better strategies to protect endangered species,” said Environment Africa Country Director, Mr Barnabus Mawire.

“The World Rhino Day is a day as a country we should raise awareness of the problem we have. We want less rhinos to die, the Zimbabwe has lost six rhinos to poachers in the last 15 months leading to calls for better strategies tin protecting endangered species.

Under the campaign code named ‘Red Rhino Campaign,’ this year commemorations will be held on Tuesday 22 September in Chinhoyi and Zimbabweans have been called upon to wear red on the day.

Zimbabweans are expected to wear red and pledge a dollar for awareness campaigns and protection of the rhino.

The worst year in terms of poaching was in 2011 when the country lost 30 rhinos in private land and 5 rhinos in state land. Figures are alarming considering the number of animals in the country,” he added.
