‘Mdc T Obert Gutu allegedly threatens to derail the much touted about MDC Alliance by contesting Biti’s Harare East constituency’
The opposition mdc t party is facing a crisis after party spokesperson Obert Gutu allegedly threatened to derail the much touted about MDC Alliance by declaring his interest to run for the Harare East constituency.
The Harare East constituency is actually reserved for the People’s Democratic Party opposition party which is led by former Minister and MDC T leader Tendai Biti, before the MDC T leader Richard Morgan Tsvangirai recalled him from Parliament after breaking away from MDC-T, on the grounds that he and others made it into parliament on MDC T tickets and if they were breaking away they should be stripped of parliamentary seats and MDC T membership.
That decision was costly to the people of Zimbabwe because it effectively gave Mugabe’s Zanu pf party the majority in parliament and they could chop and change the constitution and laws at will because they were unopposed.
Biti served as the legislator for the constituency.
Currently the opposition MDC-T party is embroiled in major internal fightsdue to the question of leadership successsion after Tsvangirai placed un elected but self choices Chamisa and Mudzuri as his deputies along with elected vice president Thokozani Khuphe, who now is clearly being sidelined after Tsvangirai put Chamisa to stand in for him in the run up to 2018 elections while he receives medical attention.
Obert Gutu is adamant that he is going nowhere and will only respond to questions which come through the proper channels of the party communication adding that for now he is in the MDC-T full time.
Other MDC T officials feel that Gutu is out of order as the Harare East constituency is reserved as an MDC Alliance seat allocated to Biti and therefore Gutu must recuse himself from the MDC T if he chooses to contest that seat.
The MDC T cases are spiralling out of control as Richard Morgan Tsvangirai’s daughter, Vimbai Tsvangirai is allegedly pursuing contesting the Glen View constituency,a matter that has clearly unsettled MDC T officials who are uncomfortable with the MDC T leader Morgan Tsvangirai’s daughter being thrown into party issues.
The people are already seeing several issues in MDC T characteristic of the ousted Mugabe’s rule, including allegedly personalisation of the opposition MDC T party by incorporating the ‘T’ for Tsvangirai.
It is also alleged that Tsvangirai’s railroading of the party by imposing his personal choice, unelected Nelson Chamisa in place of elected deputy Dr Thokozani Khuphe and totally disregarding the constitution, shows a worrying trend for lawlessness as a party that has no respect for its own constitution cannot be expected to respect a national constitution just like Mugabe had no respect for it.
They are also in total panic that the involvement of Tsvangirai’s daughter is again the same Gushungo family politics which eventually led to Mugabe’s daughter Bona Mugabe being drafted into political circles as the Gushungo dynasty took roots.
The MDC Alliance had planned to launch MDC T opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai’s campaign as leader of the MDC Alliance ahead of the forthcoming elections due in five months but the rally was cancelled as the police had banned today’s rally after refusing to clear it and at the time of writing, the police had still not issued any reasons for the cancellation.
All is certainly not well in the opposition camp and Mnangagwa, Zanu pf stalwarts and securocrats are not complaining as they have always been the winners when chaos reigns in opposition camps and they sit and watch the events from the ‘terraces’. More news to follow. By Sibusiso Ngwenya
