SEVENTEEN STUDENTS were shot dead this morning after a former student (19) armed himself with a gun and shot students at a school in Florida USA
Nikolas Cruz (19) who was expelled for disciplinary reasons, this morning armed himself with a gun and shot students at a school in Florida, resulting in the deaths of seventeen students and fourteen injured. The shooter is reported to be a former student. This is reported as the nineteenth shooting in or around a school just in February alone this year. USA is said to have over 300 million guns amongst the public, enough for each person.
There have been 275 shooting incidents since 2013 with an average of one a week. What shocks people is that one does not need training or a licence to have a gun, making it easy for criminals and mentally challenged people to access guns in acountry that frequently experiences mass shootings. It is argued that, it is a confused system because one needs to be emotionally stabe, have a healthy eye sight, and other checks before they are allowed to take a driver’s test, yet because guns are readily available and unregulated, anyone can get a gun without any safety checks or accountability by the state.
The shooting at a 1300 pupils school, 50 km north of Miami, occurred in a community with has of lowest rates of crime in the USA. More news to follow. By Sibusiso Ngwenya
